DD 4 (ogres, onions and layers)


Hey! Another dev diary, Pies Dariusz here again, because why not!

What's up?

  • We are developing AI for characters,
  • New animations (my god I finally draw, uh uh),
  • Animations have layers <- I'll tell you more about that,
  • We had an interesting conversation with a publisher acquirer,
  • We're fighting a bug in our tile editor, looks like it's a problem with Unity itself,

Onions have layers, ogres have layers:

I'm going to show you an interesting trick we're going to use in the new demo. 

As you can see in the gif, the character is divided into layers.  We have the same leg animation all the time - while the body with the backpack can play different animations, the character looks to the side, can look up, can shoot at any time while walking.


The technique will be useful for many things:

  • characters could have different variations
  • character control can be dynamic (e.g. walking and shooting) hello Resident Evil 4 ;P
  • I don't have to animate everything from scratch every time.
